Heading into the postseason, what's your take?
Duke is a serious Final Four contender
We just may have kept the Duke Foot Injury from ending our season for the third straight year
Miami is really backing into the tournament phase
So much for those little Tools and their VAUNTED twelve-guard lineup, at least until next Saturday
Still not going to miss Maryland, College Park at all
Just enjoying the ride
I have some gripe or other but will hold it for now

Jebus - they're smoking us with the 3. Meanwhile, our 3's are bricking... Bad feeling.

for MD game. the teams appear to have an all-star gentlemen's agreement: no defense.

MD's offense seems to be borrowing a wrinkle from a recent second half (I can't remember if it was Wake or Clem).

There are rumblings about new grey uniforms tonight. Anybody heard anything?

Posted by: tom Date: 1/24/2012 8:29:58 PM
That is good news. Did ESPN get a whole bunch of hate email from Duke fans about Smellmore?

Posted by: Matt Date: 1/24/2012 12:56:30 PM
That is good news! Thanks, Clemson Guest.

Hey to Clemson Guest and CDG. E-mail me if you feel like making your first appearance of the season for Wednesday's edition. No sweat (heh heh heh) if not.

Do you guys want some good news? Bob Knight will be the analyst for ESPN Wednesday at Maryland-College Park.

Props to Austin for hitting shots at the end of each half (despite the disallowance of the first half one). However, since he'll be the one with the ball in his hands in those situations, he needs to learn to hold it a mite longer, enough to get a putback on a miss, but not long enough for Snaer to hit a ridiculous and a ridiculously open three.

Posted by: CDG Date: 1/22/2012 5:18:45 PM
Awesome post, tom. The odiousness of their base never ceases to amaze me.

I also agree about the picture. Our players care and appeared crushed - which (I hope) will help propel them forward as a learning experience. Seeing them emotional about the loss has to be the only good thing about it because then it has value.

Yesterday's loss sucked, no two ways. But the way in which we lost was far less embarrassing than the way that UNC lost to the 'Noles.

Look: the 'Noles are for real and we may very well see them again in the ACC Tourney. But we did not get out-played for 40 minutes; we got outplayed for about 10 minutes total, at different periods, and that 10 was the difference between an 8 point win and that last minute 3.

Do we still need to get better? Absolutely! But we are not completely at a loss here.

Anyways, back to football. Pats are losing the plot here... GO GIANTS!

Posted by: tom Date: 1/22/2012 1:55:34 PM
Okay, long gripe and not about the game but about the UNC fans. When I moved to NC back in 84 there were UNC fans I went to school with that I couldn't stand because they're obnoxious fan base made me actually hate UNC and really enjoy Duke. Of course, I was mercissely picked on about it. Swing forward to today. A couple of these fans friended my on FB. Why? I have no idea, we never hung out in high school. So of course, I have to look at the stupid posts they make when Duke looses. You know, when UNC got their ass handed to them by FSU last week I never said a thing. My father is a UNC fan as well and he started the smack talk too. The same guy who couldn't even tell you who is in the starting line-up for them. And that my friends, is the difference in our fanhood.
Also, Hole fans love posting that picture of Austin covering up under the basket after the loss. I think it's a great pic. Why? Because I think the kid enjoys playing at Duke and hates to loose. If he didn't maybe he would put a towel over his head and just walk out like some players we saw do last week for UNC. February 8th is still a while away so lets hope the team continues to improve.
Finally, I will not be drinking Coronas during a Duke game for the rest of the season. The one time I do and see what happens? My fault.

dtaff = staff. Also, Ian Miller was the Not on Our Scouting Report Guy for this one. Oh, and Kreft had a bucket and Okaro White hit a three. Sigh.

Posted by: Matt Date: 1/21/2012 9:25:25 PM
Cook's knee was hurt against Wake; apparently h was iffy before tip and the dtaff decided not to risk it. Too bad, as it appeared that he could have helped (although Thornton played well). In any case, I'm sure K loved having only seven guys to worry about rotating, right? Although I will say that I'm not sure putting Gbinije in there would have helped much. James and Company just ate the Plumlees' lunch in the second half and asking Rivers/Curry/Dawkins to guard, say, Michael Snaer is like asking me to prevent Kevin Garnett from doing anything. Without, like, you know, ranged weaponry or something.

Yes, I forgot to credit FSU with beating the top teams of the conference. Well done on their part. Indeed.

Posted by: tom Date: 1/21/2012 6:27:15 PM
Knew it was in as soon as it left. Congrats to FSU. Did what they had to do win. It was frustrating to see Duke get 6 to 8 point leads several times in the second half and not be able to keep that. Had a feeling after Austin missed that second free throw that it wasn't going to be Duke's game. Still a lot to work on. You learn and move on from it. 5 seconds left? You still have to play defense.

Posted by: blueflame Date: 1/21/2012 6:26:13 PM
Who did Cook piss off to be a no-show? Yeah, the semi-holes played moxie defense, but (maybe its' me...) this Duke '12 team seems to function out-of-sync most all the time - very herkey-jerky. There are moments when they seem to produce some fluidity... but they are rare. Too bad we can't schedule Wake about 20 times... Goodnight night home streak, goodnight mediocre Duke, goodnight season...

Posted by: Mark Buckner Date: 1/21/2012 6:18:21 PM
I'm soooo happy for Len El-bore.

I'm watching Coach K's reactions throughout the game, not just the buzzer beater, and I can't help but think this team is a hodge podge of different parts.

I won't mention names, but our guard play is lacking when compared alongside other D-1 teams. Poor shooting, playmaking, and decisions.

Posted by: CDG Date: 1/21/2012 6:17:28 PM
sorry: should have been a "be" in there...

Posted by: CDG Date: 1/21/2012 6:16:43 PM
Congrats to FSU. They played well. We didn't do it down the stretch but a tough loss by 3 is way better than a trouncing by three times that.

There were some really great things that I saw in this game that need to built on but the bottom line is that our defense is just not really a "defense". Definite improvement needed.

Now I am going to have a few drinks...

Kelly needs to make these REALLY bad.

Jeeze... That cut was too good and should nto have happened. We got a luck call.

Posted by: Mark Buckner Date: 1/21/2012 6:02:38 PM
Austin & Seth are currently 10-30, and some of those were bad shots, at best.

Posted by: CDG Date: 1/21/2012 6:00:49 PM

Posted by: Josh Date: 1/21/2012 5:52:33 PM
Wow, great drive by Rivers! And one? No? Ah, whatever.

Posted by: Josh Date: 1/21/2012 5:49:02 PM
Argh, too easy. No post defense and then a silly TO. Now staring at a one-point game. Bear down, boys.

Posted by: CDG Date: 1/21/2012 5:45:48 PM
Oh, and no kidding Mark. "Night and day" would even be too close a comparison!!!

Posted by: CDG Date: 1/21/2012 5:44:26 PM
Please, for the love of god, stop shooting 3's, put it down low, and drawn the fouls. Good lord! Oh, and let's have some control too? M'kay, thanks!

Posted by: Mark Buckner Date: 1/21/2012 5:37:05 PM
CDG, the difference between today and that night in Philadelphia is amazing.

Kelly 3!

Posted by: CDG Date: 1/21/2012 5:36:43 PM
Outstanding play out of a time out. And again. Who are these guys on the court and can we see them for the rest of the season, please??????

Posted by: Mark Buckner Date: 1/21/2012 5:35:42 PM
Excuse me, Curry and Dawkins didn't defend.

However, Kelly dunk was needed.

Posted by: CDG Date: 1/21/2012 5:33:56 PM
Color me impressed with how we are responding. FSU keeps trying to come back and take control and we somehow find a way to limit their run.

I have probably jinxed us with this comment, but man - this is a maturity and toughness I just didn't think we had. We definitely were missing it at Temple.

Posted by: Mark Buckner Date: 1/21/2012 5:32:47 PM
Dawkins and Kelly must defend the pic&roll better!

That 3 was avoidable. Dawkins with the putback and foul.
I am happy with Duke's playing with & against physicality.

Posted by: Josh Date: 1/21/2012 4:54:07 PM
Good half. You know you're in for a slugfest when you play FSU, and I thought our guys did well. Even with the ridiculous FSU trhree to end the half, I feel good going into the second half.

Posted by: CDG Date: 1/21/2012 4:53:14 PM
Right there with you Mark!

Posted by: CDG Date: 1/21/2012 4:52:50 PM
Defense? Check!

Offense? Check!

Impressive few minutes! Can't believe that went in... too bad it didn't count.

Posted by: Josh Date: 1/21/2012 4:51:53 PM
Well, OK, "have Austin throw something up" worked that time.

Posted by: Mark Buckner Date: 1/21/2012 4:51:14 PM
I'm sincerely asking the following of those currently posting without sarcasm: why aren't both Plumlees on the floor more often?

Please educate.

Posted by: Al White Date: 1/21/2012 4:50:50 PM
Why are Kelly and Curry alligator-arming everything?

Posted by: CDG Date: 1/21/2012 4:42:32 PM

Posted by: Josh Date: 1/21/2012 4:39:15 PM
Umm...goaltend? I did not think that was "obviously on the way up", Mike Patrick.

Posted by: Al White Date: 1/21/2012 4:36:54 PM
Good catch, Smellmore. That missed call with make any Duke win meaningless.

Posted by: Al White Date: 1/21/2012 4:34:41 PM
We are not getting the calls. Ticky-tacks against us and Gibson hasn't been asked to put his weapons on the bench yet.

Does anyone else think of Dr. Seuss with Luke Loucks? Luke Loucks likes lakes. Luke Loucks licks lakes...

2 in a row for Mason!

Posted by: CDG Date: 1/21/2012 4:28:32 PM
No kidding Mark - he and I have had MANY a conversation about this issue.

Very, good feeds to the inside right now. This should continue, many, many more times. A skill set that I am pleased to see the Plumlee's have picked up this year.

Posted by: Al White Date: 1/21/2012 4:28:21 PM
OMG!! What a feed by Mason!! Great play, Miles!! All Plums, all the time.

Posted by: Josh Date: 1/21/2012 4:27:35 PM
Wow, great pass by Mason. Not so sure that wasn't intended for his brother, but either way!

Posted by: Mark Buckner Date: 1/21/2012 4:25:40 PM
CDG, Matt's been on this topic for years. However, I am sooooo thankful to have the Mizz/Baylor handshake televised.

Posted by: Al White Date: 1/21/2012 4:22:55 PM
Oh yeah, we could be getting a recap now instead of a commercial. But no, that would violate the business plan.

Posted by: Mark Buckner Date: 1/21/2012 4:22:13 PM
Josh, I concur. Looks like Westbrook made the deal to get him out. Ha!

Posted by: Josh Date: 1/21/2012 4:21:08 PM
The "Rivers dribbles for 20 seconds, then throws something up" play didn't get anything? Huh.

Posted by: CDG Date: 1/21/2012 4:20:31 PM
Gents - I was just bemoaning this very thing as your comments appeared. 15 minutes is ALL is needed!!!! Sheesh. 55 seconds becomes a painful 17 minutes.

My biggest fear was that our boys would lay down in the face of the 'Noles thuggery. I personally feel that we still lack some toughness, but I share the sentiments of TRT and Al that this team seems to be turning for the good. We have many options that can be put on the floor, something I am not at all used to.

Not the best 8 minutes, but a damn sight better than the Holes, I should add! :)

Posted by: Al White Date: 1/21/2012 4:18:46 PM
We're taking bad shots inside against James. Not a good idea. Whoa, he's out for the Kreften.

Posted by: Josh Date: 1/21/2012 4:17:57 PM
Don't know if there are any Burn Notice fans here, but Leonard Hamilton is a dead ringer for Vaughn, the bad guy from a few seasons back...

Posted by: Al White Date: 1/21/2012 4:16:10 PM
The esp-doofs can't build in a 15-minute cushion or give us a split screen or show us what we missed at the half. And why should they? There's nothing we can do about it.

Congrats to the Mime for the win in Waco, doing what Vernon Lee Howell, aka David Koresh, couldn't do.

Posted by: Mark Buckner Date: 1/21/2012 4:15:27 PM
Oh great. Mike Patrick & Len Elmore.

Well worth the wait...

Posted by: Fats "Lazer" Durston Date: 1/21/2012 4:14:03 PM
ESPN.go.com, Josh.

Let's just say they're not calling fouls (on either side) in this one. And Duke has actually responded well to that, at least early. A few too many threes, but lots of fight on the boards.

Posted by: Mark Buckner Date: 1/21/2012 4:14:02 PM
After decades of airing CBB games, ESPN STILLLLLLLL can't figure out its over 2 hours...

Posted by: Josh Date: 1/21/2012 4:08:58 PM
Well, ESPN gave us a split screen for about 4 seconds, showing us the all-important opening tip...

Posted by: Al White Date: 1/21/2012 3:50:17 PM
I agree with TRT. This is a squad full of inconsistent performers who are sufficiently interchangeable for K to find the right combination to stay in a game. Almost unprecedented for a Duke team, this edition has no player who can be counted on for 10 points in a particular game, but eight who can easily get in double figures and at least five who are capable of scoring 20 against good teams.

Dre has been in such a great rhythm that it is hard to see him having a rough shooting night, but history shows that Leering Len's gang probably will play great perimeter D. The inside guys will have a tough foe in the thirty-something James and need to come up strong.

The Devils could win this one with either great offense or a competent defensive effort. If we do both, we could win by 15+ and really show up the Tools. Actually, it will be hard not to show them up. Who thought Murray State would be in their rear view mirror at this point in the rankings?

Posted by: tom Date: 1/21/2012 1:59:30 PM
I wonder if Dawkins can have a third great game but I know the Noles defense will be keying on him. Kelly's defense doesn't appear to be getting better IMO. There was one part in the second half where Wake was driving toward a layup and he totally flopped untouched. He just needs to stop that. I do sometimes he get's the charge but not there and it just looks bad. Austin had a nice second half and I like what he said about K not starting him and how he handled it. It is a sign of maturing. So, let's continue to see some improvement. I'll be taking a break from drinking beer and painting to drinking beer and watching the game.

Posted by: Mark Buckner Date: 1/21/2012 10:54:07 AM
Another positive game by Dawkins is what I'm hoping for. Watching JJ last night against the Lakers, whether he scores or not, just his presence on the floor relieves defensive pressure on everyone.

Posted by: Fats "Lazer" Durston Date: 1/21/2012 9:19:58 AM
I appreciate Kansas and Michigan State (well, except the last week) for making those early victories look better as the season wears on. I had figured that they were going to be slightly above the middle in their respective conferences, just to pay Duke back for beating them.

Posted by: T. Randall Taylor Date: 1/21/2012 8:52:26 AM
I'm starting to feel better about this team. Not sure why; it just seems that we have enough interchangeable parts to get the job done. Plus, for some reason I feel that we haven't seen anything yet from Cook.

I only hope that Josh and Mike G. can hang in there. It doesn't look like their year.

Speaking of next year, Duke Blue Planet has been posting game highlight videos that feature Marshall interviewing other team members. You need to check them out. The kid is funny, quick, and has tons of personality.
