Heading into the postseason, what's your take?
Duke is a serious Final Four contender
We just may have kept the Duke Foot Injury from ending our season for the third straight year
Miami is really backing into the tournament phase
So much for those little Tools and their VAUNTED twelve-guard lineup, at least until next Saturday
Still not going to miss Maryland, College Park at all
Just enjoying the ride
I have some gripe or other but will hold it for now

Duke Basketball

Davidson at Duke, November 18, 2011, 6 PM EST.  Dumb start time, probably influenced by the impending Hawaii travel.  Discuss.

Seems like if Rivers doesn't score when he gets the ball, disaster follows.

CDG - from the 3 games I have seen, still a fairly loose group. The leaders seem to be Curry & Kelly. Maybe Mason can also step up.

I still believe Rivers will be the primary option, even though he has had a rough start and accordingly his play is getting a pretty harsh assessment in the mainstream press.

Wasn't able to watch this one myself and the box score doesn't tell me much more than what Tom posted below (in fact, Tom, you were much more informative!)

Question to those who watched: do we seem to be "gelling" more or is it still a loose collection of parts? Also, any indication who is stepping up as leader?

I think Matt was working late tonight and couldn't input anything into a 530 game. I had to DVR it myself. Luckily it wasn't on at the gym despite the UNC fans that were there. One guy is a Duke grad and even he didn't say anything to me about the game being on. Geez. Anyway, looks like Curry, Kelly, and Austin seem to be the go to guys right now. For every one or two great moves that Miles and Mason did, they would do something stupid like travel, air ball hook, or a bad pass. I'm wondering if that will change as the season progresses. Cook came in and did his stuff. K seemed again to want to deal with the hot hands. It appears he has a three man point guard rotation. I do like Thornton but he seems required to turn the ball over a few times when he's out there. I'm not surprised Michigan beat Memphis. They want Duke badly. So just watch what happens. Scrappy win in a physical game. Interesting to see what we will see tomorrow.

Good to see Andre so fired up after getting roughed up a little on the offensive side (no call). That was one of the more poorly officiated games I have seen in awhile.

I felt Duke played a tough, physical game. Good scoring balance, good rebounding (I was surprised to see they outrebounded Duke by 1, and we only had 2 blocks). Kelly was awesome.

Perimeter D needs work - Wolverines will be a great test in that regard.

All right: make up ghost foul.

The fuck? Foul on fast break with no contact whatsoever?

Mason had a monster game. It's just a pleasure and very exciting to see him getting better and better every game.

I may be wrong of course, but I'd love to see a steadily improving starting lineup of Mason Plumlee, Kelly, Dawkins, Curry and Rivers. The potential there is huge.

The next couple of weeks will be very exciting.

Also, that Mason to Miles dunk made SportsCenter's Top Ten, but the Curry to Mason dunk blew me away. Mason was getting pushed out of bounds in the other direction when the ball started up the court, and he still managed to beat the pack to the goal. Awesome.

Matt, with respect to Doris, she claims that A) Mason is Duke's best athlete, B) Austin is Duke's best athlete, and C) Miles is more athletic than Mason.

Can these people even hear what they're saying?

Also tom, I don't know why I said "for the record", I was agreeing with you. I just re-read that and it didn't come out like I wanted. I was agreeing with you!

For the record, i thought Quinn played an awesome game last night. The offense looked so relaxed when he's bringing it up the court. With Seth, I always feel like everyone on the court is tight and trying not to screw up, but when QC came in, everyone seemed more confident. Maybe that's just me. I've been against the "Curry as PG" from the start. He's a great SG for the record. /end rant.

Thanks for coming on here John and posting. As a graduate of ASU, Davidson is the team to beat in the Socon and McKillop is a great coach. Unlike the POS UNC graduate that coached at App (twice) and left. As for the game, I DVRd and just got done watching. First half was frustrating. Guys were getting beat Miles had his one or two token boneheaded moves. Gbinije saw the court for a minute before turning the ball over never to be seen again (will he be on the plane to Maui). Hairston got a few minutes in. Mason played well, Rivers made up for last game, Kelly did well again, Cook got some good minutes and it appeared K put Thornton and Cook more at the point in the second half so that Curry could play a little more free. I don't think K appears to be settled yet on Curry handeling point. I was hoping Andre would have another great game in a row. But just couldn't feel it tonight. It appears that Coach K tries to keep the kids in with the hot hands. He just hasn't found the consistent ones yet. Have a safe trip to Maui guys.

That was a rather entertaining game. Missed opportunities abounded for us in the second half. Lots of shots off the front of the rim, and a lack of senior leadership in the backcourt to slow things down during Duke's inevitable big run.

I thought we acquitted ourselves well, and I'm excited about our depth this year. We had a chance to scare Duke tonight and farted away about 5 minutes of the game. Boom. 15 point lead.

Keep an eye on Czerapowicz, Matt. He's a special player.

Did you note Steph's jersey?

And what the HELL is going on at UCLA? Brutal start.

Hey y'all. I agree with the point of how Davidson will dominate their conference - they look alright, IMO.

What I liked:

Mase (on both ends), Miles (2nd half), Rivers, Cook + Curry. I really think Rivers is gonna be special by March...call me out later if he does not improve on decision making, etc. Would obviously like to see more consistency from Dawk, but he could not find any rhythm in this one.

Horrible accusations at SU..I am a fan of the program and can only hope that anyone associated with the program would not commit such a heinous crime. Serious stuff.

Dark day for college sports.

In case I've never made this clear before, to anyone who wants to post here, I do this for free, and I get enough petty sniping in my real professional life, thanks. If you want to be nasty here, take it somewhere else. Opposing views are always welcome. Weird sarcastic comments are not. Thanks.

It's not everyone, it's me. I explained the "cute" "insider put-down title" in the first blog this season. If you feel the need to be rude about it, don't be.

Posted by: Jake Date: 11/18/2011 8:13:19 PM
Okay, I finally have to ask: what is this "shillBlog" that everyone keeps talking about? I think I'm pretty tuned into all things Duke basketball, but I have no idea what you all are talking about. It's really cute to have this insider put-down title, but please share with the rest of us.

I've tried for four years to like Miles Plumlee, but I have to ask why he's even playing. He has no offense. Can't handle the ball, can't put in the basket, gets few rebounds, can't play defense, is poor at free throws (although he's the only tonight to make two!!) and fouled the Davidson guys with no time on the clock and gave up two points at the end of the half.

Again, why does he even get into the game? What does he bring that Kelly would not? Or Hairston for that matter? He's been a net liability for his entire career. So disappointing.

As for the game as a whole? We look really really mediocre.

Pretty meh game, just what you'd expect between the record-setting win for Krzyzewski and a Hawaii trip.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/18/2011 7:58:44 PM
My guess is 18-0 or 17-1 for Davidson in the SoCon.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/18/2011 7:55:53 PM
Soneone on the ShillBlog is surprised that Steph is sitting in the Davidson section. Really? Uh, yeah, he's probably not going to pee on his alma mater by sitting in "the Duke section," i.e., not sit in the Davidson section.

Oh, is this team frustrating in late-game situations.

Official Syracuse Guy: Bernie Fine?????? Say it ain't so! Geez. And Oklahoma State . . . unreal. Sad.

Curry looking good from long range.

Davidson signed the Phantom of the Opera in the offseason, looks like.

Rivers breaking out a bit finally. Glad I missed the first half, as Duke did as well.

Dour Doris is awful.
