All - glad to see everybody back at it for another season. Overall, pretty impressed that we were able to build a 20-point lead over a decent MSU squad. Let's face it, we are really a second-half-of-the-top-fifteen team this year, and it was nice to see Andre have a great game with solid support from Seth and Ryan. If we are going to make any noise, it comes down to how well Mason and Austin develop. On Austin, I agree with the comments that it is too early to be concerned. Let's give him some time - talents like Kyrie just don't come around that often. He will be good, just hard to tell when he takes that step. Mason, sigh. This is his time, but sadly, I am just not sure he has it in him. I hope I am wrong as he really may be the key to how far we go this year. However, I like seasons like this where we are somewhat afterthoughts compared to the top teams - K seems to thrive in this scenario. Congrats to him on 903. Wow. Keep the posts coming everyone.

By the way, you're welcome for little Curry.

I think it is time for some talk about Friday's game against the vaunted Davidson Wildcats.

Posted by: Jake Date: 11/17/2011 10:20:59 AM
I think Austin should really shine on the fast break. For some reason we've haven't had more than 3 or 4 fast break baskets so far this season. Perhaps the other teams are so concerned about Rivers that they're dropping back early?

In any case, I think he'll progress rapidly as the season goes on. Certainly hope so.

Posted by: Serious G Date: 11/16/2011 10:06:49 PM
Austin has not lit it up as many had hoped, and he is making a lot of mistakes; however, i think the mistakes he is making (getting too deep into the lane, indecision, etc.) are something he can overcome by paying attention to his coaches and adjusting to the speed/size of his opponents.

Deficiencies aside - he is pretty damn explosive...whips by the initial defender on the regular. Just has to learn to finish plays properly

Just realized how lucky we were to have dodged Vitale with the Knight substitution: EVERYBODY LOVES DRAYMOND HAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHHAA. DID I TELL YOU ABOUT THE LUNCH I HAD WITH MISTER GRANT HILL? A VERY SPECIAL KID. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.

I'd agree that the early stallball actually looked better than the later stallball.

Posted by: blueflame Date: 11/15/2011 10:59:44 PM
Geez, what the hey happened to Austin, uh I meant sub-zero (almost his point total). Big stage, big game, epic nothing performance. Is this the same hyped-recruit we read about all summer? Looks like a mere mortal frosh desperately needing to learn how to let the game come to him. Coach will have his work cut out given Rivers continuous forced offense. This kid needs to produce offensively.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 10:57:51 PM
Good point by Jake about the obvious pressure-cooker environment not getting to this relatively young/inexperienced Duke team. I still think that Krzyzewski didn't do anything to stop the Stallball, however. Which is weird, but whatever. We won.

Posted by: Jake Date: 11/15/2011 10:53:40 PM
First, congrats to K for the historic win. Very, very nice evening overall, even if the taking heads -- and there sure were a lot of them -- did go on and on...and on.

Game was up and down for sure. Our interior offense didn't exist in the first half, although the "bigs" as they say played very active defense throughout the game and did overall a nice job on the MSU insiders. Dawkins had a huge game -- please keep it up!

I disagree about the stall ball comments earlier. Yes we slowed it down with 7 or 8 minutes to go, but we weren't playing usual stall tactics -- with a guard holding the ball at half court until the 10 second mark. Instead the guys were moving the ball around pretty smartly looking for a good opening deep into the shot clock. The big problem, I thought, was that Curry tried to singlehandedly give the game away with quick shots, horrible shots, bad passes, fouls, miscues with the ball. Pretty weird because he had a good game up until the last 8 minutes. I was surprised K left him the game. K was definitely seen chewing him out on the sidelines during a timeout with about 5 minutes left.

But we kept hitting at least half our free throws and really there was no way MSU was going to score the 30 points or so it needed in the last 9 minutes to get a win. By the two minute mark we were just letting them score uncontested two-point shots to run out the clock. Maddening for all of us, I'm sure, but not really a threat to the already assured victory (I think).

Always nice to beat MSU and win in the Garden. And the 903 factor just made it that much nicer. We didn't look like world beaters, but we had a solid game overall against a rough and tough opponent on a night when our guys could have been made nervous by the the hype surrounding the event and by the arena.

Good job guys.

Tom, good call on Stallball. THERE IS NO REASON TO TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF OF THE GAS PEDAL WHEN YOU HAVE A HUGE LEAD AND THERE IS SO MUCH TIME LEFT. NONE. NONE.

It is irony of the highest order that we're celebrating Krzyzewski's ascension to the pantheon of the coach with the most wins in Division I basketball, which mark was achieved with a nerve-wracking win in a game that should have been in the can and over at the 10-minute mark. Jesus.

Posted by: tom Date: 11/15/2011 10:20:38 PM
Sorry Matt, I can't blog during the game since I don't have a laptop but that may be a good thing because I think I was saying the F word before Miles and Mason's name a whole bunch of times tonight. Congrats Coach K on 903. That is awesome! Okay, here are my observations in no particular order.
1) I knew they would call that T on Mason for that little push off. Of course, when Nix drop knees Tyler Thornton, that is not seen. Hmmm.
2) Andre came to play and basically rescued Duke in the first half because everybody else was not really getting things done.
3) Mason did play decent defense and made I think half his foul shots. I'm assuming that's why K kept him in the game for defensive purposes. But he still did a couple of stupid fouls like that El Matador move under the basket. That was bad. And he's got to pass that ball in five seconds with the game like that.
4) Miles, was terrible. He just doesn't have hands. I think three times he had the ball knocked out. The worse was his triple error where he first gets the ball knocked out, frustrated he fouls, then, even more frustrated gets a technical for getting a foul. He does not deserve the Zoubeard right now.
5) Curry, played decent at point but he messed up fouling on that three and trying that 80 ft alley oop with the game winding down.
6) stall ball, knew as soon as it started with 12 minutes left in the game that it would start chipping away. It never fails. Sometimes, it just throws off the rythm so bad.
7) Effing Decals
8) Hope Andre plays like that consistently
9) Tyler Thornton laid it out.
10) Ryan Kelly had a pretty complete game
11) Austin was terrible, just couldn't get the breaks and he was doing some pouting. Man, so many people will hate him. OTH, you can say that other guys stepped up so it doesn't look like we are so dependent on him.
12) Hairston, played well while spelling Mason and Miles. Of course, he has a bullet shot on the one he took and he apparantly borrowed Mile's hands.
13) Cook played for maybe a minute? No sighting of Gbinije or Murphy
14) Was Bobby Knight drinking a beer?
15) It's still early in the season to see what this team will become, and that's what makes it frustrating and interesting. Greatful for the win and hope they continue to improve. Now that K has 903. Let's focus on the rest of the season.

JJ must have been there...he gave his good vibes to Dawk.

Go Duke

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 10:03:09 PM
Was Redick there? If he was, then pretty much everyone was. Well, I never saw Laettner either. If only I had an "updated list" or better court positioning. @Shillblog LOL!!!1111!

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 10:01:55 PM
Wait, was Clay Buckley my year? I dentify more with Laettner and BD for some reason. And Crawford Palmer, before he pussed out and transferred to Dartmouth. At least I got my CDs back after he borrowed them for like two weeks and I was a little nervous about going down the hall and asking for them back.

Great to see all the alums in the crowd!

Posted by: Serious G Date: 11/15/2011 9:47:37 PM
Congrats and thanks for everything, Coach K. Looks like you have a lot of work to do this year, but it will be fun.

Way to go Dawk! Steppin' up big time. I also liked R Kelly & Curry coming through. Mason was good too - just gotta finish those FTs, and no more cheap fouls!

Obviously closer than it should have been, but a solid win IMO. Duke is tougher than I thought.

Posted by: El Guapito Date: 11/15/2011 9:45:38 PM
Wow. We did not win by much, but pleasantly surprised. Is this a team that plays to their level of competition?

Saw Matt's Trinity fellow alum Clay Buckley in the crowd.

Posted by: CDG Date: 11/15/2011 9:45:31 PM
Hey Matt! So happy you're back!!! Sorry I'm so late to the party; I hope it's the kind of thing where you're just happy I came... 3 games late!

Interesting game. I know you're not a huge fan but I have always been pretty neutral about MSU - until that play by Nix. Punk ass. There were several stupid things done by some Duke players (Plumlee I - trash talk, really???) but they were nothing compared to a knee-drop to the neck. Dis-gusting.

Interesting team we've got this year. Still learning about the composite parts. Early observations are that Kelly, Dawkins and Curry have grown quite well in the off season. Thornton is a worker and could develop really well. Rivers absolutely seems lost. We still shoot too many threes but the post game looks better this year.

Great day for 903. Congrats K. Loved having Knight on the crew - excellence and class even when not surrounded by two clowns.

Anyways, super happy to have you back!

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 9:44:01 PM
Well, that's a good win, but I really wish they would stop doofing around at the end of games. Still, I fully expected a loss, so good deal. Congratulations to Krzyzewski on an amazing milestone.

Posted by: Fats "Lazer" Durston Date: 11/15/2011 9:38:15 PM
I swear I saw Matt Christensen in the crowd.

Posted by: Fats "Lazer" Durston Date: 11/15/2011 9:31:51 PM
That MSU kid ran out and back in again; shoulda been Duke's ball...

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 9:29:59 PM
One of the worst things that can happen to Duke against a real team - - get a 20-point lead. They jsut break out the Ambien after that.

Bullethead again excusing MSU's performance. "Allll those missed opportunities aroudn the rim."

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 9:27:57 PM
So this is going to be about an eight-point win. Sigh.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 9:24:43 PM
Here we go again with those f***ing decals that are going to end some poor kid's career some day. There's no technology out there to make those less slippery, right? This can't be done? Just confirming.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 9:21:36 PM
Rivers is never going to get that call (weak drive, out of control, looking for the whistle) late in any game. He needs to figure that out.

Posted by: Fats "Lazer" Durston Date: 11/15/2011 9:19:38 PM
@StingrayNarvis: maybe Duke less room to talk with Mason Plumlee on the team...

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 9:19:13 PM
Curry with a huge left-handed drive for 2 for Duke's first FG in about four minutes. You knew the drought was coming.

Posted by: Fats "Lazer" Durston Date: 11/15/2011 9:18:55 PM
CURREEEE!

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 9:17:18 PM
Bye, Nix. Great game. Ahhhhhhhhhseeya. Bullethead going on again about how damn frustrating the young man's night was. But what about his victims?

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 9:16:07 PM
More thuggery against TT by MSU. No call.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 9:14:24 PM
Bias has all sorts of excuses for MSU's poor play.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 9:12:35 PM
GD it, Duke - - beat these clowns by more than the Tools did. Cut the turnover crap.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 9:11:53 PM
Yup. Lead will be down to 13 now after Appling hits the and-one. Maybe Duke is being distracted by the ESPN scroll, containing a blow-by-blow of Jerry Sandusky's activites.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 9:10:07 PM
This is the Score Normalization portion of the game now, where Duke pisses away a big lead.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 9:07:17 PM
Fats, you and I should get Twitfeeds so we look all cool as I react with a hearty laugh to your comments, like:

@fatsdurston LOL love it your comments about @stingraynarvis22.

So what happens if every dealer out there refuses to show you the Car Fax? Won't that be a problem?

Stingray Narvis out for Transom Newsome.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 9:04:40 PM
Just an awful game by Rivers. He actually looks lost at this level. Weird.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 9:03:10 PM
Wow, Mason actually created by driving from the top of the key, and got fouled as he went to the rim.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 9:01:20 PM
20-point lead. Total blowout.

5-Hour Energy - - to pick you up for the tough hour following the expiration of that medically unsafe boner.

Dawkins Bootsies the Spartans. 18-1 Duke run.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 8:57:44 PM
LOL - - Nix decides to goon it up flagrantly. Bullethead talks about Nix's "frustration," Bias claims that this has been "a bit of a slugfest."

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 8:55:30 PM
Damn, can Kelly hit those foul shots. So rare for a big guy these days. Duke up 57-41 now.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 8:54:48 PM
Kelly drawing fouls now. Nice.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 8:54:14 PM
Duke 55, Mich St 41, 10:39(2).

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 8:53:19 PM
Duke's largest lead now. Might take some work to blow this one. Up by 14. Great technical on Miles, BTW, zebras. Make that punishment fit the crime, I say!

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 8:41:17 PM
Wow, taking some measure of control now. Seth caps another three and Thornton steals, drives and is fouled. Two shots. Ten-point lead, looking for more. This is surprising but welcome.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 8:39:35 PM
I believe that's Draymond Green's third foul. Time to bring in Stingray Narvis.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 8:38:57 PM
Andre trying to tie his personal high of eight threes in a game. Oh, just go ahead and get that record.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 8:37:52 PM
Duke 47-40 now.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 8:37:40 PM
That's a little more like it.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 8:31:37 PM
Dawkins hits his fifth three. MSU answers. Wood showing the same sort of scoring prowess he did when he laid 30 on NCCH as a member of Valparaiso.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 8:30:48 PM
Nope, Rivers picks up his third. Not getting the second on that stupid charge on a free play at the end of the first half would have been nice.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 8:29:51 PM
And now, of course, the second half tempo picks up. Now let's see if the candy stripers stop calling any and all fouls.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 8:10:00 PM
Sigh, Rivers charges, MSU gets momentum bucket on easy drive by Brandon Wood. Duke 34-33 at the half.

Posted by: Fats "Lazer" Durston Date: 11/15/2011 8:09:47 PM
Rivers decidedly unimpressive ...

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 8:09:00 PM
0:14.7 (1), in fact.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 8:08:37 PM
Very nice defense on MSU's ensuing possession. Duke with the use-it-or-lose-it T/O, 0:14 (1) left.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 8:07:07 PM
Oooh, Seth with a big 3PFG. Duke 34-31.

Posted by: Fats "Lazer" Durston Date: 11/15/2011 8:05:34 PM
'prec' the Kelly block.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 8:04:51 PM
Hard to believe that Hairston is actually getting run in a "big game." Wow!! This guy was recruited for a reason, apparently. Who knew?

Posted by: Fats "Lazer" Durston Date: 11/15/2011 7:58:20 PM
Bilas gunning for the unctuousness championship of the world.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 7:52:10 PM
Another triple by Dawkins and Duke's up 25-24. This is the Dawkins of the Baylor game in 2009-2010.

Profanity now on the ShillBlog. That's great.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 7:45:36 PM
Poster on ShillBlog says: "Two good teams going at it right now." Yeah? Where's that?

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 7:43:20 PM
Oh, silly me, Mason hits a hook shot. Mybadmybadmybad!!!

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 7:42:50 PM
18-all as Dawkins cans a three. Glad they packed him tonight. Mason predictably not detected against "tough" competition. Guards will win this one for Duke, if anyone does.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 7:41:41 PM
Poster on ShillBlog asks which former Duke players are in attendance.

ShillBlogger responds: "Have not seen an updated list and unfortunately too high up in the press area to see clearly behind the bench ." ROTFL. Well, how about a pair of binoculars, then? Better court positioning? Giving us a-nonupdated list? If anyone is really that worried about it?

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 7:37:42 PM
Ooof, just a terrible performance by Duke in the mythical first quarter. Wow.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 7:36:44 PM
If there's anything more annoying than reading a fast-moving twitfeed, let me know. Catholic priests considering handing these out as a required perusal for penance. @BobJohnson LOL!!!11!

Posted by: Fats "Lazer" Durston Date: 11/15/2011 7:34:27 PM
I, for one, am surprised that UNC class of '86 grad Bilas disapproved of the Mason foul.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 7:33:29 PM
GREAT officiating as usual for these high-profile games.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 7:27:00 PM
Geez, this squad's defense is abhorrent. MSU already has almost as many FGMs as they did against the Tools. Well, not quite, but give it five more minutes.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 7:24:45 PM
I don't understand the ShillBlog at all. Why is the Chronicle posting ads for their blog on there? I should sign up for an account and attempt to redirect traffic somewhere else. Hm, wonder where.

Nine-all.

Posted by: Matt Date: 11/15/2011 7:11:35 PM
I may not have much to say until the second half.
